Chapter 14
CADE STALKED THROUGH THE KITCHEN and out into the cool night air. What had he been thinking, kissing Keira in the library? The more time he spent with her, the more he wanted from her. Kissing her was heaven on earth, and in a few short weeks heâd found himself falling for the sexy and sweet American. Her green eyes were captivating, and he wanted nothing more than to bury his hands in her thick mane of auburn hair and kiss her senseless. He wanted her in his bed, where he could worship every inch of her body.
But that was not their deal.
Theirs was a marriage in name only.
It was funny, but for most of the last year, he had thought the most important thing in the world to him was keeping his home. His father had drilled responsibility into his young head, so much so that Cade thought of little else. How wrong that goal now seemed. It was important, of course, not only for the future well-being of the estate, but for the villagers as well. He had to keep the estate from falling into Edwardâs hands; there were too many people depending on him to shirk any of his duties. But what about his personal well-being? What about his future? Didnât he deserve happiness? It wasnât until he met Keira that heâd even begun to think about his own needs and desires. For the first time in twenty-nine years, he was thinking about what he wanted, not what the estate needed.
He wanted Keira.
He didnât want to put the needs of the estate first anymore. He wanted to put his own dreams ahead of everything else. Was he being foolish? Keira would be leaving him in less than a year. It was what they had agreed to, but he didnât want to abide by their bargain any longer. She was perfectâwitty, charming, and oh, so sexy. The sprinkle of freckles across her cheeks was adorable, and he wanted to trace each and every one of them. He wanted her to stay with him forever, to truly be his wife, and not just in name only. Would she welcome his attention? She had been more than willing to kiss him in the library, but had she felt compelled to kiss him because he was the earl or did she truly enjoy his company as much as he enjoyed hers?
He ran his hand through his hair, frustrated at himself, at the situation, and mostly frustrated at the fact that he was falling in love with Keira. There was no changing that fact. She was the first woman whoâd stirred his heartstrings. For too long, heâd put everyone elseâs well-being ahead of his own. He certainly hadnât thought about falling in love with Keira when he married her. She had only been a means to an endâa way for him to keep the estate.
That was it.
It was a business deal, nothing more.
Until now.
He desperately wanted there to be more to their relationship.
